new year's resolution

Mwahaha!

rosicrucians

I just saw the movie National Treasure. I enjoyed watching it because Misty and I had this conversation recently about Masons in the Philippines. We were intrigued about the ‘mysterious’ nature of the group and we thought someone should write a book about their influence in the politics of the country, past and present.

The organizational structure of the Katipunan was said to be patterned on the Masonic Lodges of which many of our revolutionary heroes were members. One of the great historical controversies concerning Rizal involved the Masons. Anyway, that conversation led me to give Misty an advanced birthday present of Umberto Eco’s book -Foucault’s Pendulum.

Which is the second reason why I enjoyed the movie, because with all the talk about Knights Templar and secret societies and Free Masons, and all these symbols like the pyramid and the all-seeing-eye and the all that stuff – I remembered how enthralled I was the first time I encountered all these in Eco’s book.

I had read the prologue of the Da Vinci Code and it reminded me of Foucault’s Pendulum, then just other day I read a review of National Treasure which said it was like the Da Vinci Code put to film, ha! They might as well have included the Rosicrucians.

The weird thing is that I don’t remember what Foucault’s Pendulum was all about, I just remember having enjoyed losing myself in the story, which means I probably didn’t know what was going on in the book most of the time.

It’s the same way with The Rebel by Albert Camus, I just know there’s a good critique of Marxism in one of its chapters, but all I remember are the words exigency and expediency…and that the book has been with Misty for over five years already, hmmmm.

Hey, now I remember all these books that are….ah….. in my friends’ safekeeping (I hope). Aying has Milan Kundera’s The Joke, of which I only know there’s this lady character who shat a lot hahaha! I think it’s fitting that I still have The Book of Laughter and Forgetting with me.

Zeena, who I haven’t seen for a long time, has three of my books that I haven’t seen for even a much longer time. Foremost is the booklet on Humanism, from the World’s Living Religions series, that turned me into an agnostic when I was in fourth year high school. I was convinced by what it said that people could live good lives even without the promise of eternal life in heaven or the threat of eternal suffering in hell. I thought that if there really was this one GOD and I would be punished for not believing in him or her or whatever it is, then it’s just my luck for being created by such a petty, selfish, illogical, hateful, arrogant, despotic and oh so childish GOD.

She also has the Pocketbook of O’Henry Short Stories, which is quite redundant I think, anyway this book taught me that many novels are just short stories with a lot of bullshit thrown in. Lastly, she has this 70’s edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves by the Boston Women’s Health Collective (or something that sounds like that), a feminist classic which she borrowed before Gerrie, whom I bought the book for, could even read it.

Gerrie lent her cousin Riders on the Storm, I haven’t seen another copy of the book anywhere ever since. It's written by John Densmore the drummer of the Doors about the Doors, need I say more?

Gladys has my copy of Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, the funniest book I’ve read even though I don’t know how the story goes anymore. The only other book that got me laughing as much is this retelling of the story of King David, I don’t remember the title now but there’s this scene where the nervous and incredulous Moses asked the voice behind the burning bush ‘You want me to tell the Israelites that the your name is ‘I am What I am?’

My copy of Two Towers is with her sister Grace who borrowed it after she saw The Fellowship of the Rings. It’s the only book I have of the Tolkien Trilogy which I bought at a super used bookshop in Guadalupe, Makati at a time when one can’t find a copy even at the National Bookstore, so it was a treasure when I found it two years after I read the first book. It would be another year before I could read The Return of the King. Max has my copy of The Silmarillion, I hope he still has it.

I don’t know where my Utos ng Hari by Jun Cruz Reyes is, or my Complete Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, and others I don’t even remember now. Some are lost, like Erika Jong’s Fear of Flying which I left on top of a phone booth at the MRT station in Buendia. But as Len told me, things are never lost, just misplaced.

I just hope all these books are being read by someone rather than gathering dust somewhere. Bookcrossing.com is dedicated to this philosophy that books should continue to be read, so there’s this whole community of booklovers who ‘release’ books into the world (deliberately leave books in strategic locations) in hope that it would be discovered and released again. The books have tags though so that its journey could be tracked through the website. There are some books released by members in the Philippines already.

Maybe that’s why I don’t feel so bad about ‘releasing’ my books to friends, you know, “spread the love” “share the joy” “feed the universal mind”.

Whatever.

fried balut

movement for human extinction

i saw the logo of this group about a decade ago in an environmental magazine. i don't even know if there's a real group behind it but i now totally subscribe to this proposition. there is no excuse for delaying, we humans must go.

i saw this sci-fi b-movie once, where an alien race tried to exterminate humans because we propagated unchecked to the detriment of other species, which by definition makes us a virus!

and it's true, all the other land animals that have not died out already are now either in reserves and zoos or are in ranches and farms. either for display or for food.

humans, just one specie, are already exploiting earth beyond it's carrying capacity, beyond it's capability to replenish itself. the world was better off during the time of the giant reptiles.

all our great achievements have not been earth friendly - nuclear technology, industry, engineering, fisheries, animal breeding, agriculture - with what human population is today, even primitive activities won't be sustainable anymore. just imagine close to seven billion humans hunting and gathering!

it's denial of reality if we continue to hold on to the hope that we could reverse all the destruction we have wrought on the planet's ecosystems. how could we expect us to expand the remaining forest covers and mangroves when we've just put a hole in the ozone layer for heaven's sake!

and what's mind boggling is that with all these anthropocentric exploitation and destruction of nature, majority of the ever growing human population has perpetually lived in fear and want! we have not even taken care of ourselves!

look at agriculture for example - with it we altered natural biodiverse ecosystems for the production of favored crop species needed for human consumption - but agricultural lands are now being planted with non-food crops or are being converted for industrial, residential, recreational or military use! we have selfishly appropriated earth's communal resources for our own but we could not even protect and share it between ourselves!

we don’t even see our common humanity. the female half of the population is still struggling for equality after all of human existence. slavery existed way before the great established religions but we had agreed to abolish it only on 1926! - and the damned practice persists today. wars continue to be waged on ethnic, racial, religious, national, political and ideological grounds.

natural selection developed us from apes, and from us evolved corporations. the fittest of the fittest, these creatures have rights equal to the human person, own vast resources and wealth, have massive political clout and they could live for hundreds of years. in case you don’t know it, corporations are the new dinosaurs!

it’s so easy to say that everything’s gonna be alright, there are enough resources, population is not the problem, redistribution is, and we’ll achieve that with the inevitable global social revolution and the coming new age of enlightenment and harmony, when everyone has accepted the love of the one true gender free god, where human rights and the rule of law reign supreme - but that’s plain bull and we all know it.

we are steadily using up the resources with which the future generations are to build this utopian goal with. will the next generation go against millennia of human nature and share among themselves the insufficient amount of potable water, arable land, timber, clean air - that we are leaving them with? i don’t think so.

and why is there a next generation? so that people could have grandchildren! because people don't know how to use the calendar! to satisfy maternal instinct! because it's a sin to copulate outside the framework of conception! so that the family name would continue! because of love! because there might be future presidents among them! for the greater glory of god! because for all the heights of reason that the human mind have scaled we cannot seem to control our baser instincts!

and for all these ridiculous reasons we have imposed our destructive and greedy existence into this world.

what is so great about human beings? NONE! what is so great about being human? NONE!

then, I move that we stop breeding and phase out human existence for our sake and for all other remaining living beings. we had our chance of making this world a better place but we failed. our extinction will make way for the evolution of a wiser and kinder species of earthlings.

blue

'bowling for columbine' meron din pala don.

Q. Mabuti me classic na titles, ano?

asteeg nga, merong john lennon na live in toronto nuong 1969 na gitarista niya si clapton, eh ni hindi binebenta sa astro vision yon. me mga kwela lang na pauso na pagsasamahin nila sa isang dvd ang 2 titles tapos ang pagsasamahin nila eh 'the piano' at 'the pianist' hehe, o kaya yong 'duplex' na ang kasama eh ' the human stain'! kwela tangna. meron pang 'osama' at saka 'escape from afghanistan' hwek hwek hwek.

me mga matinong anime din. 'graveyard of fireflies' na isinama with 'spirited away' ok na di ba?

novocaine

a nice thing about 'till death do us part' relationships would be the pictures, the couple gets to keep them for posterity.

no one leaves photographs behind and no one gets dumped with them. no one imposes their memories on another person. no one gets to discard their connection to their past. nobody throws away memories. no one goes numb.

i have not been blessed enough, i've turned out to be the sort of person who has to remember photographs, someone who have memories of pictures that once were but now are not.

iligan city father's day

cheryl, my friend and officemate, sent me a father's day SMS greeting on june 13th and asked me if my daughter ayi greeted me already, of course she didn't because it's not father's day yet as i realized later...much much later...after waiting about half a day for ayi to send me a greeting.

the debutante's kitchen
i spent the first hours of father's day peeling peanut's for the dessert maja blanca at a debut party in the place i was staying in iligan city. i wasn't asked to help in any other way 'cept for peeling those nuts until my eyes drooped heavily for lack of sleep. i spent the previous day helping facilitate a group discussion for the advocacy of an anti torture law in the philippines, and the day before that i joined an area visit in Bukidnon where oil palm plantations expanded into indigenous peoples lands.

the afternoon and evening i wasted waiting for my laundry which cheryl told me couldn't be picked up because the shop's damn dryer got broke or something.

radio interview

i slept in the living room of my hosts and i thought there were just a lot more people going to pee early in the morning (about 5 a.m.) when somebody went GOOD MORNING ROMEL!! i forgot how early they wake up in the province (which is weird because iligan is a city), and i realized they were just waiting for me to get up so they could finally turn on the lights in the living room.

so i turned off the alarm on my cell phone which i had set at the supposedly 'early' hour of six. i took a quick shower and waited for detdet (another friend and offciemate) for us to go to this early radio show where we were given several minutes to advocate for the anti torture law on air.

hello piggy (also gender division of culinary labor)

when we went back to the house the food preparation was in full swing, the playful pig had already been skewered in a bamboo pole and the men were roasting and boiling and whatever else one could do to a pig's innards. the women were in the kitchen, icing was being put on the bare cake and there was pasta cooking on the stove.

the father's day greetings were also finally coming in,
papa hapi faders day!luv u veri much! - ayi: 09:1800
happy fathers day fr me, kai and yhen. i love u - lenlabs: 10:25:38
and i couldn't answer back because i ran out of celfone credits to do so. i decided to go catch some sleep first but as soon as i got my self on a mat, i got a call from the 'men' at the back to join them in 'something'. that turned out to be a male bonding ritual where we all go feast on roasted pig liver done medium rare. soon rhum with sprite was being passed around.

deja vu all over again

while getting tipsy and more sleepy by the minute, i would keep myself awake by going to the kitchen and pester the inhouse master chef and cook who was then placing icing on the cake. but just a short while later i found myself in the same sleeping mat and being called back to the backyard to share something with them again. this time it was the intestines which was cooked by their bald neighbor who really looked like the early mr. clean. this time rhum with coke was being passed around, i wondered if there was a rule to it...liver-rhum and sprite...intestines-rhum and coke.

finally, cheryl contacted me with news that our laundry was finally done and that we could meet in two hours at the terminal to go back to cagayan de oro city enroute back to bukidnon. so i took a bath again to stop myself from falling asleep. refreshed, i was handed more drinks until i really really had to say my goodbyes, which prompted several quickie drinks as i shook my hands with everyone, telling them i'll know even more bisaya next time so as to be less of a communication nuisance. then i had to pass through several levels of feminine blockades that were only to be breached with a really hardened heart. and so, as the party was beginning to warm to its early guests i was already munching on a donut at the city bus terminal bench waiting for cheryl and her boyfriend gordie who had fallen asleep waiting for me, to wake up.

animagus

gordie took the ozamis bus while we took the bus which had 'the bourne identity' playing. because it erally wasn't a long trip, we arrived in cagayan de oro before the movie was finished. two other father's day greeting came in from my officemates, but i still had no money to buy celfone credits to thank them. i remember my wife finally calling me up but i just can't recall which part of the day that was.

we stayed at the usual protestant church hostel and then off we went to the mall where it said it was super specially dad's day there. but we decided that it was harry potter day that day.

when i later asked cheryl why she didn't greet me that day when she did a full week in advance, she said she just forgot.

ikabod

i just realized i'm hungry. i should go eat. now.
